Virat Kohli and Gautam Gambhir had a public argument during an IPL 2023 match in Lucknow, but they reconciled this season with multiple hugs. Gambhir’s appointment as India’s head coach was confirmed recently, replacing Rahul Dravid. The BCCI’s Cricket Advisory Committee, including Ashok Malhotra, Jatin Paranjape, and Sulakshana Naik, unanimously recommended Gambhir after interviews with him and WV Raman.
According to Hindustan Times, Virat Kohli wasn’t consulted by the BCCI before Gambhir was appointed. Despite their past conflicts, they’ve since made peace on the field. Kohli, no longer part of the T20I team, wasn’t asked for his opinion as the BCCI focused on the long-term strategy and younger players.
Hardik Pandya, a top contender for India’s T20I captaincy, was informed about Gambhir’s appointment. However, Rohit Sharma, India’s captain, reportedly preferred Rahul Dravid to continue as head coach. Both Kohli and Rohit Sharma have requested extended breaks from BCCI and might miss Gambhir’s initial series as head coach against Sri Lanka, starting July 28.
