Rajya Sabha Passes Bill for Establishment of Central Tribal University in Telangana

In a significant development, the Rajya Sabha has approved the Central Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2023, aimed at establishing the ‘Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University’ in Telangana. The bill, which received unanimous support through a voice vote, focuses on providing higher education and research facilities primarily for the tribal population in the region.

The legislation, introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 4 and subsequently passed on December 7, aims to fulfill the obligation outlined in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, mandating the establishment of a central tribal university in Telangana.

During the Winter session of Parliament, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized the significance of the new university, stating that it aligns with regional aspirations and will contribute to the promotion of higher education and research among tribal communities. The university is expected to cover a wide range of subjects, including tribal art, culture, customs, and traditional knowledge systems.

“The ‘Sammakka Sarakka Central Tribal University’ in Telangana will cater to the regional aspirations for years to come, promote higher education and research among tribal communities, including in subjects such as tribal art, culture, customs and traditional knowledge systems. The university will be a harbinger of progress for our tribal brothers and sisters across states,” said Minister Pradhan.

The minister, however, expressed dissatisfaction with the Telangana government for causing delays in identifying a suitable location for the institution. He noted that the establishment of the central university is estimated to cost approximately ₹900 crore and emphasized its pivotal role in advancing educational opportunities for tribal communities in the state and beyond.
