On Wednesday, Israel persisted in its military actions, launching a ground offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon and conducting airstrikes in Gaza. The incursion led to the loss of eight Israeli soldiers, while the Gaza strikes resulted in numerous casualties, including children. The region braced for potential escalation following Israel’s vow to respond to Iran’s ballistic missile attack from the previous day.

Iran, which backs both Hezbollah and Hamas in Gaza, fired multiple missiles into Israel on Tuesday night, further intensifying the back-and-forth cycle that is pushing the Middle East closer to a regional conflict. Israel issued a warning that the attack would have “repercussions.”

The Israeli military reported that seven soldiers were killed in two separate Hezbollah attacks in southern Lebanon on Wednesday, without providing additional information. These fatalities followed the announcement of the first Israeli combat death in Lebanon since the start of the incursion—a 22-year-old captain in a commando brigade. Seven more soldiers were injured.

The casualties, announced on the eve of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish new year, were among the most significant losses suffered by Israeli forces in recent months.

In Gaza, where the nearly year-long war that sparked the expanding conflict continues with no end in sight, Israeli ground and air operations in Khan Younis, the territory’s second-largest city, led to the deaths of at least 51 people, including women and children, according to Palestinian medical officials.
