Govt Set to Introduce New Bills in Lok Sabha Today

The Indian government has introduced six new Bills to the Lok Sabha, including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s proposed Banking Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024, which aims to amend the RBI Act, Banking Regulation Act, and SBI Act.

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will also table the Railways (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Sitharaman highlighted that the Budget 2024 will sustain capital expenditure at Rs 11.11 lakh crores, aiming to balance inclusive growth, jobs, capex, and fiscal consolidation. However, opposition parties have criticized the proposed law as “unconstitutional”, “anti-minority”, and “divisive.”

The government has referred the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 to a Joint Committee of Parliament, which has members from both Houses from multiple parties, ensuring their representation aligns with the strength of the parties in Parliament.
