In a heartfelt tribute to the world’s oldest man, José Paulino Gomes, the Brazilian supercentenarian’s passing at the age of 127 has captured global attention. Just seven days shy of his 128th birthday, Gomes peacefully departed at his home in Corrego del Cafe, as reported by local media in Brazil.

José Paulino Gomes, known for his humble and simple nature, led a remarkable life, still riding horses until four years ago. He is survived by an extensive family, including seven children, 25 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great-grandchildren.

One of Gomes’ secrets to longevity was attributed to his natural lifestyle, which revolved around consuming locally grown and raised food, with the occasional indulgence in a drink. He shunned industrialized products in favor of the simplicity of the countryside.

His 1917 marriage certificate from Pedra Bonita’s registry office indicated a birth date of August 4, 1895, making him witness to the events of both World Wars and three global pandemics, if his age claims were accurate.

However, there have been conflicting claims about Gomes’ age in the records. The current Guinness World Records titleholder for the oldest living person is Spain’s Maria Branyas Morera, aged 115, while the previous titleholder was French woman Jeanne Calment, who passed away at 122 in 1997.

Addressing the discrepancies, Jose’s granddaughter, Eliane Ferreira, explained that in the countryside, people are often registered at older ages, leading to potential errors in documentation. The family seeks accurate recording of his age on the death certificate, acknowledging that he was undoubtedly over 100 years old, potentially reaching at least 110.

The cause of José Paulino Gomes’ passing was attributed to multiple organ failure, a probable outcome of his advanced age. He was laid to rest on July 29th at the Corrego dos Fialhos Cemetery in Pedra Bonita, where his memory will be cherished forever.

José Paulino Gomes’ extraordinary journey serves as an inspiration to all, showcasing the remarkable strength and endurance of the human spirit. His commitment to a natural lifestyle and locally sourced food offers a lesson in sustainable living and longevity.
