Secretary of State Marco Rubio warns the U.S. may exit Russia-Ukraine peace talks if no progress is seen soon, reflecting growing frustration in the Trump admin
U.S. President Donald Trump is ready to walk away from peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine within days if there’s no tangible progress, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday. Speaking during a visit to Paris after meeting with European and Ukrainian officials, Rubio stated, “We’re not going to drag this out for weeks or months. We need to decide quickly—within days—if a deal is viable in the coming weeks. If it is, we’ll pursue it. If not, we’ll redirect our efforts elsewhere.”
While reaffirming Trump’s support for a peace agreement, Rubio stressed that the administration won’t wait indefinitely amid stalled talks. Trump had initially promised to end the war within 24 hours of taking office but later suggested a solution could emerge by April or May. However, those plans have encountered significant delays.
France hosted high-level discussions on Ukraine’s security on Thursday—the first such multilateral talks since Trump’s inauguration. The meeting underscored Europe’s unease about Trump’s stance toward Russia.
Rubio and presidential envoy Steve Witkoff have led U.S. peace efforts, including several rounds of talks in Saudi Arabia. Russia, however, has resisted a full ceasefire, demanding an end to Ukraine’s mobilization and Western arms aid—conditions Kyiv has rejected.
