Nepal Political Crisis: Violent conflicts have resulted from the escalation of protests calling for the restoration of the monarchy in Nepal.  There has been one fatality and multiple injuries.  The Ministry of Home Affairs has convened an emergency meeting with security chiefs to handle the issue.

Police Attacks, Arson, and Clashes in Kathmandu, security personnel and monarchist supporters engaged in violent altercations.  Security officers used tear gas after protesters tried to breach police barricades.  A media outlet, a shopping center, a political party office, and a commercial complex were all burned down during the conflict.  These attacks resulted in the injuries of over 12 police officers.

The Reaction of the Nepali Government

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has convened an emergency cabinet meeting in reaction to the growing violence.  The government is talking about the idea of arresting former King Gyanendra Shah and holding him accountable for the bloodshed.  The possible repercussions of such an action are being discussed by the cabinet.

The airport in Kathmandu is temporarily closed.  Because of the Violence

Kathmandu's Tribunal International Airport was closed for a while.  Numerous planes have been rerouted to India, including those from Seoul, Bangkok, Dhaka, and Dubai.

Why Is There More Demand for Monarchy?

Although Nepal dissolved its monarchy and embraced democracy in 2008, corruption, unstable economic conditions, and frequent political transitions have been contributing factors to the country's rising popular discontent.  This has increased calls for the monarchy to be reinstated.

Support for Former King Gyanendra Shah's call for public support on February 19, Democracy Day, caused the campaign to take off.  Thousands of supporters greeted him at the airport when he returned from his religious tour, shouting, "Bring the King back, Save the Country."

Nepal's Monarchy Movement Is Growing Stronger

According to political analysts, the call for Nepal to return to a Hindu monarchy is accelerating.  There have been thirteen changes of government in Nepal since 2008, yet political stability has eluded them, which has increased public discontent.
