An old interview with the cofounder of LinkedIn, Reid Hoffman, is going viral on social media platform X, predicting changes in the job market. According to him, Hoffman shares this view that traditional 9-to-5 jobs will soon be a thing of the past. This raises discussions about how employment is evolving and how companies can create more stability for workers in this gig economy.
People may not only change companies during their careers, said Hoffman, but may also change industries. “Industries are changing, and so are career paths. You might not do the same type of work for your entire career,” he said. “You might work in the gig economy, juggling two or three gigs. This has been the trend in the workforce for decades.”
Neal Taparia, an Indian-American entrepreneur and investor, posted a clip from the Hoffman interview on social media, saying, “Your 9-to-5 job is dying. By 2034, it’ll be extinct.” His post racked up more than 17 million views and 61,000 likes to date.
He also pointed out three past predictions by Hoffman that came true. Hoffman had been able to predict the effect of social networks because of which he sold LinkedIn to Microsoft for more than $26 billion, predicted the sharing economy where he was one of the first investors in Airbnb, and recently, the AI revolution far ahead of ChatGPT’s time.
Meanwhile, 56-year-old Reid Hoffman recently endorsed Kamala Harris of the US Vice Presidency to win the Democratic presidential nomination. He thus wrote on social media: “I wholeheartedly support Kamala Harris and her candidacy for President of the United States in our fight for democracy in November.”
