According to a report from Hindustan Times, Rohit Sharma is confirmed to lead India in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. Earlier speculations suggested Rohit, along with Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, might skip the tour, possibly paving the way for KL Rahul to captain the ODI team. However, the latest report indicates Rohit’s return to action, with Virat and Bumrah taking extended breaks after a hectic schedule.
India is scheduled to play six ODIs before the Champions Trophy 2025, which reportedly influenced Rohit’s decision to participate. This series will also mark Gautam Gambhir’s debut as the head coach of Team India.
Meanwhile, the debate over India’s T20I captaincy continues. Both Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav are strong contenders. Reports suggest Suryakumar Yadav is currently favored due to concerns over Hardik Pandya’s fitness issues. Suryakumar’s recent experience as India’s T20I captain against Australia and South Africa has strengthened his case.
The T20I leadership position became vacant after Rohit Sharma retired from the shortest format following India’s recent World Cup victory. Despite Pandya’s crucial role in that triumph, he will be absent from the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka due to personal reasons. The T20I series against Sri Lanka will take place from July 27 to 30 in Pallekele, followed by the ODIs from August 2 to 7 in Colombo.
The final squad announcement for the series is expected soon. According to a senior BCCI source, while Pandya remains fit and available for T20Is, there is a strong inclination towards Suryakumar Yadav as a potential long-term captain, possibly until the 2026 World Cup.
