Three Civil Service aspirants were killed when the basement of a coaching center flooded on Saturday evening in central Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar district due to heavy rain.
The bodies of Shreya Yadav from Uttar Pradesh, Tanya Soni from Telangana, and Nevin Dalvin from Kerala were discovered by rescuers as they excavated the basement.
Aspirants and students at Rau’s coaching center became extremely enraged at the incident, and other institutions protested outside the coaching center and carried signs criticizing the authorities for the murders.
In addition to accusing the institute of carelessness, the victims’ families claimed they were denied access to view the victims’ bodies at the hospital.
Shreya Yadav
Shreya Yadav, a 25-year-old student from Ambedkar Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, began attending Rau’s IAS coaching institution in April 2024. Out of her three siblings, Shreya was the oldest. Her goal upon moving to Delhi was to ace one of the hardest exams in the nation.
Shreya graduated with a B.Sc. in Agriculture from Sultanpur’s Kamla Nehru Institute of Technology. Her instructors and family recall her as a bright child who was always “smart in studies” and as a potential student.
One of Shreya’s brothers, Abhishek Yadav, is a mass communication student, while Shreya’s father owns a dairy store in Ambedkar Nagar.
Shreya’s father, Rajendra Yadav, claimed that she had informed the family in the past about the basements getting flooded after rain earlier and the institute had done nothing to address the issue. Her father alleged that the institute did not inform him about the incident and he came to know about it through the media. Meanwhile, Shreya’s uncle Dharmendra Yadav alleged he was not allowed to see her body at the hospital.
Nevin Dalvin
Nevin Dalvin, a 28-year-old IAS aspirant from Kerala’s Ernakulam, had been living in Delhi for around eight months. He was pursuing a PhD from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Nevin, who was staying at Patel Nagar, had visited the library located at the basement at around 10 am on Saturday morning.
Nevin’s family has been staying in Ernakulam for the last 10-12 years, and they are originally from the Thiruvananthapuram district.
Tanya Soni
Tanya Soni, a 25-year-old woman, was originally from Aurangabad in Bihar but now lived in Secunderabad, Telangana. She attended Delhi University as a student.
She had enrolled in the coaching program 1.5 months prior and was living in the women’s dorm at Maharaja Agrasen College, DU, according to news agency PTI.
Vijay Kumar, Tanya’s father, is employed by a Telangana mining business. She had a brother and a sister who were her younger siblings.
Following a post-mortem, her body was brought to Aurangabad for the final rites.
