Jasprit Bumrah, Smriti Mandhana Win ICC Player of the Month Awards for June
Jasprit Bumrah, hailed as the lead star in India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign, created another record as he won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for June. There was double reason to rejoice for India as it was also announced that Smriti Mandhana, the vice-captain of the women’s team, has been picked as ICC Women’s Player of the Month. Her achievement came on the back of Mandhana’s lead performances in India’s ODI series success over South Africa last month.
Bumrah emerged as the best choice in the men’s category, leaving compatriot Rohit Sharma and Rahmanullah Gurbaz from Afghanistan in his wake. He was in scorching form during the T20 World Cup—during which he picked up 15 wickets and took home the Player of the Tournament award—as clinical India went on to win the title without a single loss.
“I’m proud to receive the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award for June,” Bumrah said in an ICC release. “Past few weeks have been really special to me and the team as well — winning both series in the USA and West Indies. This award is a recognition of our team’s good work.”
While strong performances in the ODI series against South Africa, inspired by a dominant century and constant runs throughout, earned Mandhana the women’s accolade, her aggregate of 343 really brought home the point that she was totally instrumental in helping India win the series with an average of 114.33.
“I’m elated to hear that I’ve been named ICC Women’s Player of the Month for June,” said Mandhana. “The series against South Africa was special, and I feel grateful that my performances were instrumental in our team’s success. I look forward to continuing to perform and contributing more victories for India.”
The performances of Bumrah and Mandhana continue to show guts and acts of leadership in their respective teams, setting a high standard in international cricket.
