After firing at former Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal this morning, Narain Singh Chaura—who is allegedly connected to the Khalistani terrorist organization Babbar Khalsa—was taken into custody. While Mr. Badal was performing his penance at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, he attempted to attack him.
Those on the scene overcame Chaura, allowing Sukhbir Singh Badal to escape unscathed.
The incident occurred around 9 am shortly after Mr Badal, who was in a wheelchair, had taken the ‘sewadar’s’ place at the gate of the Golden Temple.
Visuals from the spot show Chaura slowly approaching the gate and then taking a gun out of his pocket. A man standing near Mr Badal quickly spotted him and held his hands.
Narain Singh Chaura: Who Is He?
About 60 kilometers from Golden Temple, in the Gurdaspur region of Punjab, is the hamlet of Chaura, where Narain Singh Chaura resides.
Chanam Singh and Gurnam Kaur welcomed him into the world on April 4, 1956.
Security establishment sources claim that Chaura is connected to Babbar Khalsa, also known as Babbar Khalsa International, a banned pro-Khalistan organization.
The 68-year-old is also credited with being the brains behind the 2004 Burail breakout in Chandigarh, where four prisoners broke out of the prison after excavating a 104-foot tunnel. These four inmates were Devi Singh, a murderer, Babbar Khalsa commander Jagtar Singh Hawara, and the killers of former Punjab commander Minister Beant Singh, Paramjit Singh Bheora and Jagtar Singh Tara.
Chaura was arrested in 2013 in a case under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. He was released on bail five years later.
Sukhbir Singh Badal on Tuesday started his penance by serving the religious punishment given to him by the highest temporal body of Sikhs in a sacrilege case.
The Akali Dal chief sat in a wheelchair at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, wearing a plaque around his neck and holding a spear, visuals showed.
Due to his preference for Dera Sacha Sauda founder Gurmeet Ram Rahim during the 2015 Guru Granth Sahib sacrilege, Mr. Badal was condemned by the Akal Takht to serve as a “sewadar” and be assigned to clean duties in the kitchen and restroom of many gurdwaras, including the Golden Temple.
