Virat Kohli Nears Sachin Tendulkar’s Record at Cricket World Cup 2023

India’s star batter, Virat Kohli has made history! During Thursday’s ICC Cricket World Cup match against Bangladesh at Pune, Kohli crafted a magnificent century. This marks his 48th in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 78th at the international stage.

Scoring 103 runs off 97 deliveries, including six fours and four sixes, Virat Kohli’s performance displayed precision and mastery. This latest century places him just a single ton behind the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s ODI record of 49 centuries. Moreover, with 78 international centuries now under his belt, Virat Kohli is only 23 away from surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s astounding record of 100 international tons.

But that wasn’t the only milestone achieved by Virat Kohli. The match saw him amass over 26,000 international runs, surpassing this milestone in just 567 innings. This achievement left behind the record previously held by Sachin Tendulkar, who reached the same in 600 innings. With a stellar average of 53.99, Kohli’s cumulative runs now stand at 26,026, pushing him past Sri Lankan cricketing stalwart, Mahela Jayawardene, and placing him as the fourth-leading run-scorer in international cricket.

Virat Kohli’s performance in the ICC World Cups has been noteworthy. In his 30 World Cup matches, he has scored 1,289 runs, averaging 53.70. These statistics firmly position him as the fourth-highest run-scorer in World Cup history, with Sachin Tendulkar, amassing 2,278 runs, securely holding the top spot.

Regarding the recent match against Bangladesh, the latter chose to bat initially, setting a total of 256/8 in 50 overs. Key performances for Bangladesh came from Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das, while bowlers Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah led the charge for India. However, the Indian chase was dominated by a strong partnership between skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, with Virat Kohli’s century and his partnership with KL Rahul sealing the victory.

At the end of the match, India had secured its fourth win in the tournament, placing second on the points table. On the other hand, Bangladesh holds the seventh position.
