Vijayadashami: Celebrating Triumph of Good Over Evil

Dussehra, or Vijayadashami, is a major Hindu holiday that is enthusiastically and fervently observed throughout India. This auspicious day, which falls on the tenth day of Navaratri, celebrates the victory of light over darkness, righteousness over wrongdoing, and good over evil.

It represents the triumph of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana and the victory of the goddess Durga over the buffalo monster Mahishasura, and it is deeply symbolic for Hindus.

The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has greeted his family of countrymen on the auspicious occasion of Vijaya Dashami.  Shri Narendra Modi said that this pious festival marks the end of negative forces and brings the message of embracing the good in life.

Significance of Vijayadashami

  1. Victory of Good Over Evil: The most profound significance of Vijayadashami is the celebration of the victory of good over evil. It commemorates the day when Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, defeated the demon king Ravana, who had kidnapped Rama’s wife, Sita. This epic battle is narrated in the ancient Indian epic, the Ramayana.
  2. Goddess Durga’s Victory: In some parts of India, Vijayadashami marks the end of the Navaratri festival, culminating with the immersion of idols of Goddess Durga. It signifies the triumph of the divine feminine energy over the demon Mahishasura.
  3. Auspicious Beginnings: Vijayadashami is considered an auspicious day to start new ventures, educational pursuits, or any significant life events. It is believed that initiating something on this day ensures success and good fortune.

Vijayadashami is more than a religious festival; it holds a unique place in the cultural tapestry of India. It is a time for people to come together, celebrate their shared heritage, and reaffirm their commitment to the triumph of good over evil.

The festival also plays an essential role in strengthening the social fabric, promoting unity, and instilling moral values. It reminds people of the eternal message of righteousness and the importance of standing up against injustice and wrongdoing.

Date & Time of Vijayadashami

This year, on October 23, the Dashami Tithi began at 5:45 p.m. and will conclude at 3:14 p.m. on October 24.

In the meantime, despite the joyful mood, security measures have been put in place to preserve peace and order in the nation’s capital. Approximately one thousand police officers and supplementary security have been stationed in Delhi in anticipation of today’s Ravan Dahan.

Firecrackers are prohibited; yesterday, this police squad confiscated almost 100 kg of firecrackers. When it comes to security during the Dussehra celebrations, the entire city has been made aware of this, according to police.

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is a holiday that transcends religious lines and brings people together to celebrate virtue and the triumph of good over evil. It is a powerful reminder that righteousness will always triumph with faith, courage, and determination—regardless of how great the problems may seem. This festival unites people from all walks of life in celebration and harmony. It is still vibrant, happy, and spiritually uplifting.
