Vijay Diwas: History and Significance of December 16 Celebration

Every year on December 16, Vijay Diwas is observed to honor India’s triumph over Pakistan in the 1971 war, which also led to Bangladesh’s freedom. The day marks a significant moment in Indian history. The nation honors the military’s valor and sacrifice on this day.

December 3 marked the beginning of the 13-day conflict between India and Pakistan in 1971. The humanitarian catastrophe in East Pakistan, when the Pakistani army started an offensive on the civilian population, was the catalyst for the start of this conflict. India stepped in to aid the populace in their fight for autonomy.

The commander of the Pakistani army, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, publicly turned himself in to the joint forces of India and Mukti Bahini of Bangladesh on December 16, 1971. The greatest military surrender since World War II occurred when almost 93,000 Pakistani men gave up.

In addition to creating Bangladesh, the victory solidified India’s position as a regional force. An estimated 3,900 Indian soldiers lost their lives as a result of the fatalities, while hundreds more were injured.
