The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government designated November 25 as “no non-veg day” in memory of Sadhu TL Vaswani’s birth anniversary.
According to a state government statement, all slaughterhouses and meat stores will be closed on Saturday.
“It is to inform you that the birth anniversaries of our country’s great men who promulgated the Doctrine of Non-Violence are commemorated as ‘Non-Violence’ days.” The UP government has been issuing notifications to keep the slaughterhouses closed in the state while we commemorate Mahavir Jayanti, Buddha Jayanti, Gandhi Jayanti, and Sadhu TL Vaswani Jayanti,” the notification added.
“On the occasion of birth anniversary of Sadhu TL Vaswani on November 25, 2023, it has been decided that all the slaughterhouses will remain closed,” the notification read.

Authorities have been requested by the government to ensure that the directive is adhered to carefully throughout the state.
On November 25, 1879, Sadhu Thanwardas Lilaram Vaswani, an educationist who founded the Mira Movement, was born. Born from a Sindhi family in Hyderabad Sindh (now in Pakistan), he advocated for women’s education and emancipation in the nation. Vaswani, a brilliant orator and writer, also campaigned for a vegetarian diet.
Vaswani died at the age of 86 on January 16, 1966. In Pune, a museum devoted to his life and teaching was opened. On November 25, Sadhu Vaswani’s birthday, International Meatless Day is observed.
The UP government’s recent declaration comes only days after it issued an order prohibiting the manufacturing, storage, distribution, and sale of food products with Halal certification with immediate effect, in a decisive move against the unlawful issuance of “Halal Certificates.” However, items made for export will be exempt from the limitations.
