On Thursday, the Delhi High Court awarded expelled BJP leader Kuldeep Singh Sengar a two-week interim relief on medical grounds. Sengar is serving a life sentence for raping a juvenile in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh in 2017.
A bench led by Justice Prathiba M Singh postponed Sengar’s punishment for the time being and ordered that he be admitted to AIIMS-Delhi for medical examination and reside in the city once freed.
“Considering the history of the case as also the medical condition of the applicant, it is directed that the applicant will be released on interim bail for two weeks and he shall seek admission in AIIMS Delhi for a comprehensive medical evaluation,” the court, which included Justice Amit Sharma as well, stated.
The court requested a report from AIIMS’ medical board and scheduled the hearing for December 20.
Sengar is also serving a 10-year sentence in connection with the killing of the Unnao rape victim’s father. His application for interim bail in that case is still pending before another bench of the high court.
Sengar requested temporary bail on the grounds that he was suffering from a variety of diseases, including cataracts, that required immediate attention.
The request was contested by both the victim’s counsel and the CBI.
