Union Minister Smriti Irani called Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Nyay Yatra’ a sham on Thursday, saying individuals notorious for injustice are claiming to bring justice.
On the sidelines of an event here, Ms Irani, the Union Women and Child Development Minister, was replying to a question on Mr Gandhi’s intended yatra.
“Those known for injustice are doing ‘dhong’ (sham) for justice,” Ms Irani, who beat Gandhi in the previous Parliamentary election in Amethi, remarked.
As part of its preparations for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, Gandhi will conduct a yatra from Manipur to Mumbai beginning on January 14.
From east to west, the 67-day trip covers 6,200 km across 85 districts in 14 states.
Gandhi had previously led the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ from Kanyakumari to Kashmir.
Ms Irani is in Amethi, her parliamentary seat, for two days. She stated during the Social Empowerment Camp at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya in Gauriganj that the BJP administration at the Centre gives financial support of up to 5 lakh to 10 crore impoverished households via the Ayushman Bharat plan every year.
She said that the initiative has helped the underprivileged by covering their healthcare needs.
Ms Irani further stated that she has spoken with the Chief Medical Officer of Amethi and that camps for the disabled would begin next week in all Nyaya Panchayats in the Amethi region.
