Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Union minister of state, is facing legal action in Kerala for allegedly inciting religious enmity among various communities. The case has been filed by the Cyber Cell of the Kerala Police.
The Indian Penal Code’s section 153 (a) (promoting enmity between different groups on the basis of religion, race, place of birth, or domicile) and Kerala Police Act’s section 120 (o) (creating disturbance and violating public order) are the charges brought against the union minister.
According to PTI, the Kerala police have independently filed an FIR about the minister’s recent social media comments referencing the Kochi blast and a Hamas leader’s virtual speech at an event hosted by an Islamist organization in the Malappuram district.
A day after the chief minister of Kerala, Pinarayi Vijayan, was accused by Chandrasekhar of engaging in “appeasement politics” and of making offensive remarks regarding religion following the explosion in Kochi’s Kalamassery area that claimed the lives of three people, including a twelve-year-old girl, the chief minister was accused of radicalization on Monday.
“Never once did I mention any specific neighbourhood. I stated ‘Hamas’ specifically. The Union minister remarked at a press conference, “It almost seems as though Pinarayi Vijayan wants to associate Hamas with the community.
“Both the Left and Congress have been allowing radical elements to grow in the state,” he stated, alluding to the remarks made online by former Hamas head Khaled Mashal during a pro-Palestine demonstration in Malappuram on October 28.
Prior to this, Vijayan on Sunday had made an indirect reference to Chandrasekhar during a media interaction.
“Those who are poisonous will keep spitting poison,” Vijayan said. “One of the Union Ministers made a statement that I am engaging in appeasement politics and protesting against Israel.”
