Union Cabinet Approves One Nation, One Election: Report

One Nation, One Election was authorized by the Union Cabinet, and ZEE News TV sources predict that the Comprehensive Bill would be introduced at the current Winter Session of Parliament. Simultaneous Lok Sabha and state assembly elections would be a significant milestone if the One Nation, One Election law is introduced and approved by both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha.

The Central government, under by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, formed a High-Level Committee on September 2, 2023, to investigate the viability of having simultaneous elections in India.

Former President Ram Nath Kovind served as the committee’s chairman. The report was turned in by the committee on March 14, 2024, following the collection of opinions, comments, and ideas from a range of stakeholders, including political parties. The government wants to hold both the assembly and parliamentary elections at the same time.

The most recent development follows rumors that suggested the NDA administration could introduce the law during the current winter session or during the upcoming budget session. Congress has already opposed the bill and the INDIA bloc parties are likely to remain united in opposing the legislation.
