UGC Recommends New Degree Names, Introduces Bachelor of Science (BS) for Humanities and Commerce

In a significant move to redefine degree nomenclature, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has put forth recommendations that introduce fresh titles for degrees awarded by higher education institutions. One notable suggestion is the introduction of the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree, which will encompass diverse disciplines such as arts, humanities, engineering, and commerce, among others, for undergraduate programs lasting four years.

This forward-thinking proposal aims to provide greater flexibility and recognition to students pursuing non-science fields while aligning them with global educational practices. By introducing the BS degree, the UGC aims to acknowledge the interdisciplinary nature of modern education and promote a holistic approach to learning.

Additionally, the UGC has proposed the inclusion of the nomenclature ‘Hons with Research’ for degree programs that integrate research components into their curriculum. This acknowledgment seeks to encourage undergraduate students to engage in research activities, fostering a spirit of inquiry and innovation.

If implemented, these changes will revolutionize degree names in higher education, reflecting the evolving academic landscape and empowering students to explore diverse areas of knowledge while emphasizing the significance of research in their educational journey.
