UGC Mandates NCC as Elective Subject

The University Grants Commission (UGC) recently released a notification mandating Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to add the National Cadet Corps (NCC) as an elective subject in the curriculum. Certain measures have also been drafted for the HEIs to include NCC as an elective subject for students.

According to the UGC, the director general of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) in his communication, pointed out that it is necessary for Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to have affiliation with NCC troops to offer as an elective subject.

The official notification stated, “It is regarding the inclusion of NCC as an elective subject in universities. The elective subject can only be offered to students who are enrolled as NCC Cadets. In view of the above, the HEIs are requested to take appropriate measures in this regard.”

The NCC has developed a standardised and universally applicable general elective credit course in alignment with NEP 2020. Enrolled students will benefit by earning academic credits for their NCC training and receiving NCC ‘B’ and ‘C’ certificates. It will also enable more students to take advantage of employment incentives and benefits offered under various central and state government schemes.

More details regarding the credit framework and elective subjects are available on the UGC website.
