The University Grants Commission (UGC) in a recent notification has addressed the issue regarding the appointment of ombudspersons mandated under UGC (Redressal of Grievances of Students) Regulations, 2023.

The new notice was issued in continuation of the notification dated 01.06.2024.

“Following intimation from the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) regarding the appointment of ombudsperson, the list has been updated as of 1st July 2024. It is once again reiterated that the defaulting universities may appoint the Ombudsperson as per the UGC Regulations and communicate the same to the UGC,” states the Commission’s notice.

The UGC had earlier directed these institutions about their non-compliance and requested them to appoint ombudspersons. Despite this, several universities are yet to take the necessary actions prompting the Commission to take action.

As per UGC, appointment of ombudsperson is necessary to ensure that student grievances are addressed effectively and efficiently.

Out of the list of defaulting institutions, 46 state universities, six private universities and 11 deemed universities are yet to appoint ombudsperson.

This includes notable institutions such as Calcutta University, Jawaharlal Nehr Technological University and Ranchi University.
