The University Grants Commission (UGC) said on Wednesday that it had found and marked 20 universities in India to be “fake.” These institutions are not permitted to award degrees to students. Most of these universities (eight) are located in Delhi.
The UGC’s action is intended to keep students from becoming victims of unaccredited and fraudulent educational establishments. Before enrolling, students and parents should check the accreditation status of universities.
“The UGC has learned that a number of institutions are awarding degrees in violation of the provisions of the UGC Act.” Degrees conferred by such universities are neither accepted nor valid for further education or employment. “These universities are not authorized to confer any degree,” said UGC secretary Manish Joshi in a statement.

Last year, the UGC published a list of 21 universities it labelled as “fake.” Several universities have been added to the list this year as well. Universities are only authorized to issue degrees if they are formed under a Central, State/Provincial Act, or are recognized as deemed-to-be universities, according to the UGC.
Furthermore, institutions specifically authorized by an Act of Parliament have the authority to confer degrees on pupils. This assures that degree-granting institutions have the legal support and authorization needed to uphold academic standards and provide authentic qualifications to their students.
