Universities should undertake considerable translation efforts, including the translation of textbooks into several Indian languages, to support this. AICTE’s ‘ANUVADINI’ machine translation program, for example, can be used for the initial translation round, followed by manual editing to verify accuracy. Standard glossaries issued by the Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT) can aid in the translation process, while regional glossaries published by Grantha Academies and language departments can also be consulted.
The University Grants Commission has issued translation guidelines to ensure standards at the national and regional levels. The criteria provide an emphasis on simplicity, clarity, and conveying the original intent and notions. To allow simpler translation and comprehension across languages, a pan-Indian common core vocabulary with common roots, suffixes, and prefixes is pushed.
Rather than relying on word-for-word translation, the translation process necessitates careful consideration of domain-specific terminology and adherence to the whole meaning and concept of the source text. Avoid using terms with connotative meanings or properties that do not exist in the source language. To retain accuracy and context, the translated material should be meticulously updated, comparing it to the original document.
