In the next following months, the University Grants Commission hopes to release approximately 1,500 more publications in various Indian languages. PM Modi launched 100 books in 12 Indian languages, including Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu, during the inaugural session of the second Akhil Bhartiya Shiksha Samagam, and expressed hope that universities will play an important role in developing high-quality textbooks and teaching-learning materials in Indian languages.
UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar elaborated on the efforts made by the expert committee chaired by Nageswar Rao, vice-chancellor of Indira Gandhi National Open University, to promote Indian languages in higher education: “Translation of books into Indian languages will help institutions develop high-quality material and increase access to higher education.”
“A team of subject experts, academics, and translators is also being formed across India to prepare textbooks in Indian languages,” he stated.
To ensure the quality of the translation job, comprehensive instructions have been released to all colleges for book translation.
