According to a Wall Street Journal opinion survey of seven battleground states, former Republican President Donald Trump has an advantage over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in terms of who would best lead the nation through the conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine.
The poll, which was released on Friday, tied Trump and Harris overall among the seven states that might determine the outcome of the presidential election in November.
According to the poll, Trump was up 6 points in Nevada and 1 point in Pennsylvania, while Harris had slim leads of 2 percentage points in Arizona, Georgia, and Michigan. The two were tied in North Carolina and Wisconsin. There was a margin of error of four percentage points in every state from the poll of 600 registered voters that was conducted between September 28 and October 8.
The neck-and-neck results are consistent with earlier polls indicating a close race before the Nov. 5 election, as Americans weigh worries about the economy, immigration, women’s rights, and the nation’s democratic values when deciding between the two candidates.
According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released this week, Trump and Harris are locked in a close contest nationally, with Harris leading by 46% to 43%.
Swing state voter surveys can be useful indicators because the winner will be determined by the Electoral College results, with the seven battleground states likely to be critical.
Harris would win a small majority in the Electoral College if she captures the states where she leads in the WSJ survey.
According to the WSJ poll, Trump leads Harris in the seven swing states 50% to 39% on who is best able to handle Russia’s war in Ukraine. Trump also has a 48% to 33% lead over Harris on who is better suited to handle the Israel-Hamas war.
More voters said they backed Trump on the economy and immigration while more said Harris would do a better job when it comes to housing, healthcare and caring about people like them, the WSJ poll found.
