A devastating fire erupted at a drug rehabilitation center in Langarud, a city in Gilan province, northern Iran, leading to the tragic loss of at least 32 lives, according to the judiciary’s Mizan Online news website. The incident occurred in the early hours of Friday, leaving 27 people dead, while 12 others were rushed to hospitals for medical attention.
The cause of the fire remains unclear at this point, but provincial chief justice Esmail Sadeghi has announced that an investigation is already underway to determine the origins of the blaze. The rehabilitation center had a capacity for up to 40 individuals.
Local ISNA news agency released footage capturing the fire, which illuminated the night sky and sent thick plumes of smoke billowing into the air. Additionally, images of the severely damaged site emerged after the fire had been brought under control.
This tragic incident follows previous fire-related incidents in Iran, including an August fire at Tehran’s Grand Bazaar, which damaged multiple shops but fortunately resulted in no casualties. However, in January 2017, a fire at the 15-story Plasco shopping center in Tehran claimed the lives of at least 22 people, including 16 firefighters.
