In a devastating incident, a bus explosion in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul, claimed the lives of seven individuals and left 20 others injured, according to local police. The blast occurred in the Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood, known for being the enclave of the historically marginalized Shiite Hazara community.
Kabul police spokesman Khalid Zadran provided information about the tragic event, stating, “An explosion occurred in a bus carrying civilian passengers in the Dasht-e-Barchi area of Kabul, unfortunately seven of our compatriots were martyred, and 20 others were injured.” The incident underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by the region.
Security personnel swiftly responded to the scene, initiating an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the explosion. The safety and well-being of the affected individuals remain a top priority.
Notably, this incident follows a previous deadly explosion in the same Dasht-e-Barchi neighborhood, which was attributed to the Islamic State group in late October. In that earlier event, Taliban authorities reported four fatalities and seven injuries. While bomb blasts and suicide attacks have significantly decreased since the Taliban assumed power in August 2021, putting an end to their insurgency against the US-backed government, various armed groups, including the regional chapter of the Islamic State, continue to pose a threat.
The people of Kabul and the international community remain vigilant, working together to address these security challenges and ensure the safety and well-being of the population.
