Tomato Prices Remain High Across Major Indian Cities, Government Introduces Discounted Sales

Due to monsoon rains and the lean season, prices of tomatoes, a widely used produce in Indian kitchens, remained raised at up to 250 per kilogram throughout major cities. According to government data, the all-India average price is currently around 117 per kg.

To provide assistance to retail customers, the central government has begun selling tomatoes at a discounted price of Rs. 80 per kg in selected cities including Delhi, Noida, Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Arrah via NAFED and NCCF. On Saturday, around 18,000 kgs were sold in Delhi-NCR via mobile vans at a price of $90 per kg.

The NCCF and NAFED are selling tomatoes on behalf of the Centre through mobile vans, starting in Lucknow, Patna, and Muzaffarpur. The Department of Consumer Affairs has reported a sharp drop in Azadpur Mandi wholesale prices and a slight dip in retail prices. The sale in Lucknow saw 7,000 kg of tomatoes sold, and interventions will be continued in Kanpur and Delhi.

According to government data, the average all-India retail price of tomatoes was 116.86 per kg on Saturday, with the greatest rate being $250 per kg and the minimum rate being $25 per kg. The average price of tomatoes is $100 per kilogram.

Tomatoes ruled among metros, commanding 178 per kg in Delhi, 150 per kg in Mumbai, and 132 per kg in Chennai. Hapur had the highest price of 250 per kilogram.

Tomato prices often rise during the months of July-August and October-November, when output is typically low. The disruption in supply caused by the monsoon has resulted in a substantial increase in rates.
