The Supreme Court has ordered the state and the Centre to give information on the rescue and rehabilitation efforts in the violence-torn state of Manipur.
As the Supreme Court heard a petition seeking a SIT probe into the Manipur unrest on Monday, Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud expressed grave worry about the loss of life and property as a result of the violence in the state. “Our immediate goal is to protect, rescue, and rehabilitate people,” the Supreme Court stated, requesting the Centre and the state government for information on relief camps. “How about the displaced people?” They must be returned to their homes. “Religious sites must also be safeguarded,” the Supreme Court stated.
“This is a humanitarian problem.” The government is doing something. We have no doubt that they are acting on what the SG stated. “You may express your concerns in an appropriate manner so that this proceeding does not become another source of unrest,” Chandrachud added.
The governments (Centre and state) submitted to the Supreme Court that the curfew imposed in the aftermath of last week’s violence was lifted yesterday, and there were no incidences of violence on Sunday or Monday. After a week, the Supreme Court requested an updated status report on the Manipur issue.
The violence began last Wednesday in ten districts following a march protesting the Meitei community’s desire for ST classification, which constitutes for around 53% of the state’s population. At least 54 people were killed in the subsequent arson, property was destroyed, and hundreds were relocated to safer areas.
