Thailand has announced the deployment of an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system for visa-exempt travellers, including Indian visitors, beginning December 1.
According to Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the measure attempts to improve immigration procedures while also tracking foreign nationals.
“This move is part of Thailand’s broader efforts to ensure national security and improve visitor flow management without compromising its status as a major global tourist destination,” according to a statement.
This follows Thailand’s decision to extend visa exemption to other nations in July of this year.

When entering Thailand, nationals from 93 visa-exempt countries must provide an Electronic Travel Authorization. Visitors from Cambodia, Laos, and Malaysia are free from this restriction.
Each approval will grant a single entry. It is valid for up to 60 days per visit which will be extendable by 30 days.
How to apply for an ETA?
The process of obtaining an ETA can be completed online. Visitors will need to submit their information electronically through a new platform. There won’t be any fee for this application.
This authorization system will be introduced alongside an e-visa system. The Thai government plans to integrate both systems by June 2025. This will allow visitors to submit one unified online application for their travel to the country.

Travellers with an ETA will be able to use automated immigration gates at checkpoints. Visitors can enjoy faster immigration clearance by scanning the QR code on their ETA, which streamlines the entry process even further.
Travellers must adhere to their allotted stay limits. The new system will track visa-exempt nationals’ stays, and overstaying may result in penalties, including daily fines for non-compliance.
Will ETA guarantee entry into Thailand?
An ETA will expedite the immigration process, but it does not guarantee entry into Thailand. Border authorities retain the right to refuse entry if they believe it is essential. The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that border discretion will remain in place even with the new system.
