Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) announced on Tuesday that it will soon begin producing its key processor chips at TSMC’s new manufacturing facility in Arizona, marking the first time AMD’s products will be made in the United States.
Although the plan predates former U.S. President Donald Trump's return to office, the move aligns with broader industry efforts to diversify supply chains amid rising geopolitical tensions. The Trump administration is currently investigating whether semiconductor imports pose a national security risk, a move that could pave the way for new tariffs on such products.
“Our fifth-generation EPYC CPU, designed for data centers, is performing well, and we’re ready to move into production,” AMD CEO Lisa Su said during a media briefing in Taipei. Until now, AMD's chips have been exclusively produced at TSMC’s Taiwan facilities.
Alongside AMD, both Apple and Nvidia have also begun producing some chips at TSMC’s Arizona plant. Su added that AMD recently acquired ZT Systems, a major U.S.-based AI server supplier, further expanding its American presence.
Su emphasized the importance of a resilient supply chain, with both Taiwan and the U.S. playing critical roles. She also mentioned plans to find a strategic partner for ZT's manufacturing operations.
