Taliban Implements Ban on Women’s Beauty Salons in Afghanistan

The Taliban-led government in Afghanistan has recently announced a ban on women-run beauty salons, leading to the unemployment of numerous female workers in a country already burdened with poverty and gender-based restrictions. This article sheds light on the latest development, highlighting the implications for Afghan women and the ongoing restrictions imposed by the Taliban.

In a move that further restricts women’s rights, the ministry of vice and virtue, under the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan, has enforced a ban on women-operated beauty salons. The ban, issued through a text message on Tuesday, mandates the immediate closure of all women-run beauty salons in Kabul and other provinces. Salons have been given a one-month deadline, starting from July 2, to comply with the ban. Violators of the ban are warned of potential legal action by Mohammad Sadeq Akif Muhajir, the ministry’s spokesman.

This ban adds to the existing restrictions already imposed by the Taliban, including limitations on girls’ access to education, sports facilities, and public spaces such as parks and swimming pools. The Taliban had recently expanded their restrictions to include women working for the United Nations, enforcing a strict dress code. Moreover, they have imposed travel restrictions on women, mandating their presence with a male relative during journeys, thus curbing their freedom of movement.

The ban on women’s beauty salons has severe implications for Afghan women, as it not only denies them employment opportunities but also contributes to the growing economic challenges faced by many families. With the closure of these salons, female workers are left without a source of income, exacerbating the existing poverty crisis in the country.
