Syria’s Two Main Airports Out of Service After Simultaneous Israel Strikes

In a recent development, Syrian state media reported that Israel’s airstrikes have caused significant damage to the country’s two main airports. This marks the first attack of its kind since a weekend assault by Hamas on Israel ignited intense hostilities in the region.

Both Damascus, the capital, and Aleppo, a northern city, host the affected airports and are under the control of the Syrian government. The strikes were described as “simultaneous” and were confirmed to have damaged critical landing strips, rendering the airports temporarily out of service. The source of this information was cited as an unidentified military official.

The timing of these strikes coincides with a week of intense clashes between Hamas and Israel. The conflict escalated after hundreds of Hamas militants crossed the Gaza border into Israel, resulting in the tragic loss of 1,200 lives, primarily civilians.

This significant event also unfolded while the U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, was visiting Israel. Furthermore, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, in a phone conversation with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, called for closer cooperation among Arab and Islamic nations to address the ongoing situation with Israel.

The military source quoted by Syrian state media characterized the Israeli strikes as a “desperate attempt” by Israel to divert attention from the ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza.

Over the past decade of war in Syria, Israel has launched numerous airstrikes on its northern neighbor, with its primary targets being Iran-backed forces, Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, and Syrian military positions. Israel has consistently emphasized its determination to prevent its arch-nemesis, Iran, which supports the Assad government, from expanding its influence in the “enemy country”.
