Sushmita Sen Opens Up on Her Hiatus from Films at HTLS 2023

Veteran Bollywood actress Sushmita Sen, known for her remarkable career spanning three decades and iconic roles in films like “Ghatak,” “Biwi No 1,” and “Main Hoon Na,” has revealed the reason behind her extended break from acting, during a candid conversation with Sonal Kalra, Chief Managing Editor of Entertainment and Lifestyle at Hindustan Times, at the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit 2023.

Intriguingly, Sushmita Sen’s hiatus from the silver screen, which lasted from 2015 to 2020, was motivated by her desire for more challenging roles and the opportunity to evolve as an actress. She expressed her discontent with being confined to repetitive roles and the limitation of expression from 201 to 2010. She sought more diversity in her roles, a chance to grow, and the excitement of becoming a student once again in the world of acting.

To achieve this, Sen enrolled in acting workshops and dedicated herself to learning. She relished the experience of being a diligent student, eager to enhance her acting skills. “That’s what Aarya did for me. I would have a 14-hour workshop, other actors would come and go, and I would be the permanent fixture, just hungry to learn. I would go back home very late at night every day, for 21 days. And I loved it, loved that I was finally learning how to do my job,” she explained.

Sushmita’s return to the screen in 2020 with Ram Madhvani’s action-drama series “Aarya” marked a significant turning point in her career. The series showcased her renewed passion and dedication towards her craft, and it was met with critical acclaim. She also earned praise for her role in “Taali,” a film based on the life of trans rights activist Shree Gauri Sawant.

As fans eagerly await the third season of “Aarya,” set to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar on November 3, Sushmita Sen’s journey serves as an inspiring example of an artist’s unwavering pursuit of growth and the quest for more meaningful and challenging roles.
