Suryakumar Yadav Out of Champions Trophy

Suryakumar Yadav might have just played his last ODI for India. Despite being an exceptional player in T20 cricket, Yadav has struggled in One Day Internationals (ODIs).

His stats in ODIs are modest: 773 runs from 37 matches with an average of 25.76 and four half-centuries. He had a chance to prove himself in the World Cup, but his performance was disappointing when it mattered most, scoring just 18 runs off 28 balls in a crucial match.

BCCI chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar hinted that Yadav’s ODI career might be over. At 33, Yadav is a key player in T20 cricket, even serving as captain, but it seems his time in ODIs could be finished.

With KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer back in the team, Yadav’s chances of playing another ODI are slim. It’s also unlikely that he will be part of the Champions Trophy next year.

Former India opener Aakash Chopra noted that Yadav was part of the team that reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup and played in the 2024 T20 World Cup. However, Agarkar confirmed that Yadav is currently not being considered for ODIs and will only be seen in T20s.

The BCCI and team management gave Yadav several opportunities in ODIs, but he failed to make a lasting impact. His performances were inconsistent, and he was moved between different batting positions without success.

In contrast, Shubman Gill is expected to be a key player for India in the Champions Trophy. Despite not making it to the final squad for the T20 World Cup, Gill has been recognized as a valuable player across all formats. Agarkar and Gambhir both believe that Gill’s ability to play in all formats is a great asset. Gill has been given important roles, including being appointed as captain for the tour of Zimbabwe and vice-captain for both ODIs and T20Is.

Agarkar praised Gill for his performances and leadership in the IPL and against Zimbabwe, highlighting his importance to the team.
