Suella Braverman’s Resignation Letter Criticizes Rishi Sunak’s Leadership

In a dramatic turn of events, former UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman penned a scathing resignation letter after being dismissed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The letter, published on Nov 14, 2023, criticized Sunak for his failure to deliver on key policy priorities, expressing disappointment in his leadership.

Braverman, despite acknowledging Sunak’s lack of a personal mandate to be prime minister, claimed to have supported him based on firm assurances regarding essential policy goals. These priorities included reducing illegal migration, implementing measures to prevent small boats from crossing the channel, delivering the Northern Ireland Protocol and the Retained EU law legislation, and issuing statutory guidance protecting biological sex.

In her letter, Braverman accused Sunak of a “manifest and repeated failure” to fulfill these commitments, characterizing it as a “betrayal of our agreement” and a breach of his promise to do ‘whatever it takes’ to stop the boats. She bluntly stated, “You have manifestly and repeatedly failed to deliver on every single one of these key policies.”

Highlighting the consequences of Sunak’s alleged failures, Braverman pointed to record election defeats and declared that time is running out for effective action. She asserted, “Someone needs to be honest: your plan is not working, we have endured record election defeats, your resets have failed, and we are running out of time.”

While acknowledging that she might not always have chosen the right words, Braverman emphasized her commitment to voicing the views of the “quiet majority” that supported the party in 2019. Despite the resignation, she pledged to continue supporting the government in pursuing policies aligned with an authentic conservative agenda.

In response to the criticism, Rishi Sunak addressed a weekly meeting with a commitment to “drive change.” This came a day after appointing former Prime Minister David Cameron as the new foreign secretary. Sunak expressed determination, stating, “Our purpose is nothing less than to make the long-term decisions that are going to change our country for the better. I know that this strong and united team is going to deliver that change for everybody,” in his opening remarks to the new Cabinet.
