Sri Lanka’s World Cup Woes: Chief Selector Points to External Conspiracy

Sri Lanka’s cricket team, led by Chief Selector Pramodaya Wickramasinghe, landed back home early Friday morning, facing the aftermath of a disappointing World Cup campaign.

Wickramasinghe, a member of the victorious 1996 World Cup squad, didn’t mince words, alleging a conspiracy from external forces as the root cause of Sri Lanka’s dismal performance. “Give me two days to disclose everything about it. This was the result of a conspiracy from outside,” he declared, taking full responsibility for the team’s showing.

The team’s early exit follows a five-wicket loss to New Zealand in the last group stage match in Bengaluru, marking their worst World Cup performance since 1992 with just two wins out of nine games.

Injuries plagued the former champions, forcing replacements and even a mid-tournament change in captaincy. The nadir came against India, where they were dismissed for a meager 56, sparking public outrage.

The sports minister’s decision to dismiss Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) led to further chaos. The governing body’s subsequent reinstatement by the court of appeal did little to quell the crisis. A joint government and opposition resolution in parliament demanded the resignation of the SLC’s management.

The government, divided over the minister’s actions, released a report suggesting a new constitution for the governing body with a revamped voting structure for office bearers.
