Former Indian team captain Virat Kohli has been pulled back into a huge controversy after Team India’ thrilling 5-run win over Bangladesh in their Super 12 match of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Adelaide on Wednesday, November 2. Since the 2007 ODI World Cup, whenever these two Asian giants have clashed in the ICC event, it has resulted in edgy contests filled with exhilarating experience from both sides.

Kohli became the ‘Player of the Match’ for his outstanding 64 not out off 44 balls. But the point that has grabbed plenty of attention in social media was his fielding. After losing the match, Bangladesh wicketkeeper-batter Nurul Hasan claimed that the on-field umpires missed an incident of ‘fake fielding’ from Kohli, which could have resulted in five crucial penalty runs for Bangladesh.
"Certainly the field was wet and it had an impact and everyone saw that and eventually what I felt is that when we were talking there was a fake throw and it could have been a five-run penalty and that could have gone our way but unfortunately even that didn't come," Nurul said reporters after India won the match by five runs.
Dear @ICC it’s not fake fielding?

The incident Nurul was stating took place before the rain interruption. During the second delivery of the seventh over of Bangladesh's chase, Litton Das pushed an Axar Patel towards the off side and came back for a couple. When Arshdeep Singh the fielder, threw the ball towards the keeper, India's Virat Kohli, standing a few meters in front of Dinesh Karthik, was seen making a gesture of collecting the ball and throwing when the ball was not even near him.
According to Cricket’s Law 41.5, pertaining to unfair play, it is prohibited to ‘deliberately distract, deceive, or obstruct the batter’, and if an incident is deemed to be a breach, the umpire can declare that particular delivery as dead ball, and award the batting side five runs.

Interestingly, the rain resumption and 'fake fielding' were not the only umpiring decisions that were debatable on Wednesday. Dinesh Karthik was given run-out by the third umpire despite replays showing the ball hadn't dislodged the bails. It was in fact, the Bangladesh bowler's hands. That was not the end of it. Karthik was once again in the thick of things. India pacer Arshdeep Singh found the outside edge of Litton Das' bat and the India keeper dived in front to take the catch, which was ruled not out by the third umpire after seeing just a couple of replays.
