According to the coal ministry, South Eastern Coalfields (SECL), a state-run company, will spend 169 crore rupees over the next five years to plant a variety of trees in its operating regions of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

In order to do plantation work in these states, the business recently inked MoUs with the Rajya Van Vikas Nigams of Chhattisgarh (CGRVVN) and Madhya Pradesh (MPRVVN).

The ministry states that the plantation will be done for five years, from 2023–2024 to 2027–2028, with four years of upkeep after each succeeding year of planting.

According to the MoU, SECL will invest 38.11 crore in Madhya Pradesh and 131.52 crore in Chhattisgarh on plantation operations, it was said.

More than 26 lakh seedlings will be planted in Chhattisgarh by the corporation in collaboration with the state government, and almost 12 lakh saplings will be planted in Madhya Pradesh. This MoU represents the company’s third of its kind.

Between 2013–14 and 2022–23, the company planted more than 16 lakh plants in Madhya Pradesh and more than 46 lakh saplings in Chhattisgarh through the previous two MoUs, at a cost of more than 168 crores.

The plantations will use polypot plants that are six to twelve months old. The cultivation of fruit-bearing trees such jamun, imli, bel, mango, and sitaphal as well as medicinal and herbal plants like neem, amla, and karanj will take place.

In addition to these, ornamental / avenue plants like gulmohar, kachnar, amaltas, peepal, jharul, etc. as well as timber value trees like teak, sal, bamboo, babool, sissoo, and safed sirus will also be planted.

According to the proposed terms of the MoU, the local villagers’ opinions will also be taken into consideration while choosing the plant species to be used, keeping in mind the needs of the surrounding communities.
