The first international cruise liner, the Costa Serena, will set sail domestically in Mumbai tomorrow, according to Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Shri Sarbananda Sonowal.
Such cruise initiatives are driven by the ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ programme, which was started as a plea by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi to the middle class to favour local vacation over overseas tourist.
The goal of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways is to get India listed as a cruise destination on the global map. Achieving the goal of 50 million cruise passengers in India by 2047 was a major topic of discussion at the Ministry’s recently concluded Global Maritime India Summit 2023. India appears to have enormous potential, thus this seems doable.
In the next two months, Costa Cruises anticipates carrying about 45,000 people on its voyages. If not, these travellers would have made their reservations from overseas locations. The largest benefit is that Indians can experience international sailing in Indian seas.
