Smriti Irani, Union Minister, defended her stance on period leave, challenging the need for employers to be aware of women’s menstruation. In an interview with ANI, she addressed the issue over her earlier comments in Parliament, underlining that menstruation is a normal part of women’s lives and not a handicap.
Irani advocated against required reimbursement for time off, citing potential harassment and increasing hurdles to women entering the job. Her remarks drew condemnation, with Telangana chief minister K Kavitha calling Irani’s ignorance “appalling.” Irani stated that her controversial remark was meant to draw attention and spark conversation, specifically around LGBTQIA+ individuals and menstrual leave regulations.
At the first joint protest of the 28-party Opposition alliance INDIA, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge underlined the importance of unity in the face of the BJP government’s perceived danger to democracy.
He accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah of seeking to destroy democracy and the Constitution while speaking at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi.
Kharge questioned the suspension of MPs during the winter session, notably Ramgopal Yadav, and chastised the governing BJP for enacting bills unchallenged after evicting the Opposition. He urged the opposition to get together, claiming that Modi alone could not win unless other parties joined forces.
