Siddaramaiah Faces Major Legal Setback

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s appeal against Governor Thawar Chand Gehlot’s decision to allow his prosecution in the MUDA land fraud case has been rejected by the Karnataka High Court.

The Governor “did apply his mind in abundance,” according to a bench of Justice M Nagaprasanna, and the decision approving the prosecution “does not suffer from non-application of mind.” “The Governor’s acts are flawless. The reported facts require further research. The court declared, “The petition is dismissed.”

Subsequently, the court denied a request for a two-week stay of its ruling made by senior counsel Abhishek Singhvi, who was representing the Chief Minister. The judge declared that he was unable to revoke his own ruling.

The High Court’s ruling means the lower court can now initiate legal proceedings against the Chief Minister, which will include filing a first information report and ramp up pressure on Siddaramaiah.

The High Court had earlier directed the trial court to take no action till its verdict.

Ahead of the verdict, security had been beefed up around his residence and the police were told to be on high alert to avert “untoward incidents”, underlining the political tension over the alleged land scam.
