The Municipal Corporation Shimla election is concluded, with the Congress capturing a strong majority after winning 24 of the 34 wards. The BJP failed to retain power, winning only 9 seats, while the CPIM got a solitary seat. On Tuesday, when the hill state went to the polls, there was a 59 percent voter turnout. The SMC elections were held after a nearly year-long hiatus. The civic body’s five-year tenure expired in June 2022, but elections could not be held due to judicial proceedings disputing ward delimitation.
The Congress felt optimistic about its chances following its victory in the Himachal Pradesh assembly elections in December, relying on its performance during the previous five months to get over the finish line. The BJP, on the other hand, relied on the outgoing Shimla Municipal Corporation board, which it led from 2017 to 2022.
