Sharad Pawar Asserts Ajit Pawar Remains NCP Leader, Denies Party Split

Sharad Pawar, the head of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), claimed on Friday that Ajit Pawar, the deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, is still an NCP leader and that the party has not divided.

A day after his daughter and the party’s working president Supriya Sule claimed that Ajit Pawar is a senior leader and MLA of the party, NCP supremo Pawar was speaking to reporters in his hometown of Baramati in the Pune region.

Sule, the NCP’s Baramati MP, told reporters on Thursday, “Now that he (Ajit Pawar) has taken a stand that is against the party), we have given a complaint to the assembly speaker and are awaiting his response.”

Sharad Pawar responded, “Yes, there is no doubt about it” to a query on Supriya Sule’s claim that Ajit Pawar leads the NCP.

How can anybody say that there is a split in the NCP? There’s no question that Ajit Pawar is our party leader,” he said.

“What does a political party split mean? Split happens when a sizable portion of a party splits at the federal level. But nothing of the sort has occurred here. Some guests departed the gathering, while others adopted a different stance. They have the right to make decisions in democracies, he continued.

On July 2, Ajit Pawar and eight additional NCP legislators joined the Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state administration in the state of Eknath Shinde.
