Shami Alerts Fans to Fake News: Here’s What Fans Should Watch For

Veteran Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami recently called out a fake news report linking his comments on Virat Kohli to former India cricketer Amit Mishra. On Sunday, Shami criticized the report and urged media outlets to verify their sources before publishing news.

In a YouTube show called ‘Unplugged,’ hosted by Shubhankar Mishra, Shami talked about his close friendship with Virat Kohli and senior India pacer Ishant Sharma. He shared how both Kohli and Sharma supported him during his injury recovery, frequently calling him to check on his well-being. Shami said, “Virat Kohli and Ishant Sharma are my best friends. They constantly kept calling me when I was injured.”

Shami was reflecting on his time away from international cricket due to an Achilles tendon operation earlier this year, which caused him to miss the IPL 2024 and the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

However, some media outlets misconstrued Shami’s comments as a response to a recent statement by Amit Mishra about Kohli. Mishra had said that “fame and power” had changed Kohli, resulting in fewer friends within the Indian team. Mishra’s podcast comments contrasted his experiences with current India captain Rohit Sharma, with whom he maintains a jovial relationship.

Upset by the false reports, Shami took to social media to clear the air. He tweeted, “Disappointed to see false information circulating about Amit Mishra. It’s a humble request to verify news sources before publishing.”

Mishra had also commented on his changing relationship with Kohli. He mentioned that while he still respects Kohli as a cricketer, their personal relationship isn’t as close as it once was. Mishra explained that he has maintained a friendly rapport with Rohit Sharma, joking and interacting with him even during IPL events. He said, “I won’t lie. As a cricketer, I respect him a lot, but I don’t share the same equation with him as I used to. Why does Virat have fewer friends? His and Rohit’s natures are different.”

Mishra also highlighted the difference in his relationship with Kohli and Rohit, noting that despite Rohit’s success, including winning the World Cup and five IPL titles, they still share a light-hearted and friendly bond.

Shami’s criticism of the fake news emphasizes the importance of accurate reporting and the need for media outlets to verify their sources before spreading information.
