SC Grants Bail to SRS Group Chairman

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court granted bail to Anil Jindal, chairman of Haryana-based SRS Group, accused of obtaining credit facilities worth ₹770 crore through deception.

A panel led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna granted Jindal bail, noting that he had been in jail for more than six years and that the trial in the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) case had not yet begun.

Directing his release, the bench, also comprising justice PV Sanjay Kumar said, “Though the offence is grave, the fact that the accused has been in prison for so many years without trial cannot be overlooked.”

The court imposed conditions to prevent evidence tampering, directing Jindal to provide a list of his bank accounts and immovable properties to the trial court and prohibiting him from opening new bank accounts or alienating existing property without the court’s permission.

In addition, he was requested to give his passport to the trial court and disclose his contact information with SFIO so that they could follow his travels.

Senior counsel Maninder Singh, who spoke for Jindal alongside advocate Vivek Jain, stated that Jindal had been in prison since his arrest in April 2018, and the inquiry was still ongoing.
