Former Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra has been appointed Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). He will take over on Wednesday and be in office for three years, the government said in a statement. Mr. Malhotra was drafted in the 1990 batch and is a Rajasthan cadre Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur and a master’s degree in public policy from Princeton University in the United States.
Mr. Malhotra has worked in a number of businesses throughout the course of his more than 33-year career, including banking, taxes, information technology, mining, and electricity.
Prior to being appointed Revenue Secretary, he was Secretary of the Department of Financial Services.
He has substantial expertise in finance and taxation at both the state and federal levels, according to the Department of Revenue’s website.
