The interior ministry of Ukraine confirmed that the missile strike took place in Chernihiv’s central square. Among the wounded, 12 were children, and 10 were police officers. President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was on a working visit to Sweden, expressed his grief through a Telegram post. He mentioned that the missile hit various places including a square, a polytechnic university, and a theater. Zelensky conveyed that a routine Saturday turned into a day of pain and loss due to Russia’s actions.
Aftermath of the Strike
A video shared by Zelensky depicted the aftermath of the attack, showing debris scattered across the square in front of a regional drama theater. Several parked cars were heavily damaged, and a brief glimpse of a casualty inside a vehicle was also visible. The drama theater’s roof was destroyed in the strike. Chernihiv, known for its historic sites, is situated about 145 km north of Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital.
Continuing Conflict
The incident highlights Russia’s strategy of launching attacks on Ukrainian cities that are far from the front lines of the conflict. This approach has been ongoing since Russia initiated its invasion in February of the previous year. In response, the Ukrainian military announced that it successfully intercepted 15 out of 17 Iranian-made Shahed drones launched by Moscow in an overnight strike. This exchange of attacks underscores the ongoing tensions and violence in the region.
